Dr. Karel Berkhoff is Senior Researcher at the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Since 2003, he has been teaching at the University of Amsterdam. His first book, Harvest of Despair: Life and Death in Ukraine under Nazi Rule (the Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 2004; paperback ed. 2008), received the Fraenkel Prize in Contemporary History, Category A, and its Ukrainian translation was shortlisted as Ukrainian Book of the Year 2011, category: History. He also published Motherland in Danger: Soviet Propaganda during World War II (Harvard University Press, 2012). He is currently engaged in research for a monograph about the history and remembrance of Babi Yar.
