Description of the procedure implemented regarding informed consent and prior information for registering data
The procedure governing informed consent and requests for informed consent for the CORPSES of MASS VIOLENCE & GENOCIDE project has been drawn up in full accordance with the European Parliament and Council Directive 95/46/CE of 24 October 1995 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.
This procedure is based on the provision of information prior to consent to individuals being interviewed or observed, and proper obtainment of informed consent. Information prior to consent can be given in the presence of a third party and with the assistance of an interpreter if necessary in order to ensure that the explanations given have been completely understood.
The team will take care to leave sufficient time between initial contact and the meeting proper (for an interview or observation), allowing for a period of reflection and giving the option of withdrawal from the study if so desired. The team will be able to call upon the guidance of its ethics advisor if they encounter difficulties linked to political, social, religious or psychological contexts, or other sensitive situations.
Informed consent must be obtained prior to carrying out any interviews or observations. The model for the consent form is here in its English versions. Translations into the project’s other languages – French, Russian, Spanish, Bosnian, Cambodian, Kinyarwanda – will be also available.
